The moment a tire blows, every instinct in your body says to brake hard. That instinct is wrong. Slamming the brakes during a blowout is the main reason blowouts turn into fatal crashes.

When a tire fails at 70 mph, the blown side suddenly creates massive drag. If you brake, you transfer weight onto that damaged corner of the car, the rim can dig into the pavement, and you lose steering control entirely. What was a survivable situation becomes a rollover.

The Three Things to Do in the First Three Seconds

These three moves in order — before you've had time to think:

  1. Grip the steering wheel hard at 9 and 3. The car will yank toward the blown side. Hold it straight with both hands, no oversteering.
  2. Take your foot off the gas — don't touch the brake. Let the blown tire's friction slow you down naturally.
  3. Keep the car pointed straight. Small corrections only. No sudden lane changes.

Once you're under 30 mph, then you can ease the brakes gently and steer toward the right shoulder.

The Counterintuitive Move That Actually Helps

For a front tire blowout, some driving instructors recommend a brief, light press of the accelerator right after the blowout — not to speed up, but to stabilize. It shifts weight to the rear axle, lightens the front end, and makes the car easier to steer straight.

This feels insane in the moment. But it works for the same physics reason that braking is dangerous: you're controlling where the weight goes. A split-second of gentle throttle, then ease off and let it slow naturally.

But they only run weekdays and you can't call them directly, so don't count on it.

Don't Drive on the Rim — Seriously

  3. Road hazards. Potholes, debris, and curb impacts weaken the internal structure of the tire. A tire can fail from a pothole hit weeks or months after the impact.
