Hold the Fob Against the Start Button — It Actually Works
Press the brake, hold the fob flat against the START/STOP button, and push the button through the fob. Not your finger next to it — the fob itself touching the button.
There's a tiny chip inside every smart key called a passive transponder. It needs no battery at all. Your car has a short-range antenna behind the start button that powers that chip up close.
It may take two or three tries before the engine catches. Push firmly, hold it there, and don't give up after the first attempt.
Check for a Hidden Fob Slot Too
Some cars skip the button trick and give you a hidden fob slot instead. If holding it to the button does nothing, look for a slot before you panic.
Common hiding spots are inside the center console, under the cup holders, or in the glovebox. Slide the dead fob into the slot, then press START like normal.
